Phetchabun is upper-central Thailand's sea-of-mist province. Campers know three names — Khao Kho, Phu Thap Boek and Nam Nao — differing in altitude, mood and driving difficulty, but united by winters that trade in mist views and cold air.
Pitches mostly run ฿30–300 per person per night — cheapest in Nam Nao national park, rising with the view on Khao Kho and Phu Thap Boek. It's four to five hours from Bangkok, better suited to two nights than one.

Khao Kho is the biggest and easiest zone — good roads, varied grounds, cafes and daytime stops — right for families and first-timers. Phu Thap Boek sits much higher and is the province's most famous mist lookout, paid for with a steep, narrow climb that demands careful driving. Nam Nao is true national-park pine forest and cold air, the quietest of the three.
November to January is this province's season: mist most mornings and genuinely cold nights everywhere — Phu Thap Boek can approach single digits, so pack real winter layers. It's also high season, and the famous grounds fill early. The rains turn the hills green with few visitors, but mist is no longer guaranteed and the Thap Boek climb gets slick.
The Thap Boek climb doesn't suit drivers new to mountain roads — if unsure, sleep on Khao Kho and visit by day. Nam Nao charges park entry and its nights run colder than people expect. Stock food at Camp Son or Lom Sak markets before heading up.
December–January is the coldest, dipping below 10°C on Phu Thap Boek and in Nam Nao — bring a cold-rated bag and a beanie.
It can, with a confident driver and a healthy car — several stretches are steep and narrow. If unsure, sleep on Khao Kho, whose roads are far kinder.
