Absolutely breathtaking! Thung Bua Tong at Doi Mae U Kho is a spectacle you have to see to believe. The rolling hills are completely carpeted in millions of Mexican sunflowers, creating a sea of pure, vibrant yellow. It is easily the largest and most stunning flower field in Thailand. Be sure to time your visit for mid-to-late November when the bloom is at its peak. Worth the drive to Mae Hong Son!
Tung Buatong Fields 2025: Beautiful Blooms, But Missing the Magic of 2024 I returned to the famous Tung Buatong / Buatong Fields this year expecting the same unforgettable experience as 2024. While the flowers themselves are still blooming beautifully, the overall visit in 2025 felt very different — and a bit underwhelming. Last year, the local municipality put a lot of effort into preparing the area. There were check-in points, decorations, and spotlights illuminating the fields at night. We arrived in the evening back then, and you could see the golden hills glowing beautifully from afar. It felt magical. But in 2025? All of that was gone. No lights. No check-in point. No special setups. Just darkness and a very quiet atmosphere. After speaking with locals, many believe this toned-down season may be connected to the passing of our beloved Queen, which resulted in fewer arrangements by local authorities. Whether official or not, everyone agreed that this year is significantly quieter. This change affects more than just the vibe — it affects livelihoods. With fewer visitors and no special arrangements, local vendors and families are facing a slower season, unlike the busy and lively 2024. If you’re planning to visit Tung Buatong Fields in 2025, know that the flowers are still blooming beautifully, but the festive atmosphere from last year is missing. Even so, your visit can still help support the community during a much quieter season.
We dropped in whilst riding the Mae Hong Son Loop right at the end of the rainy season in the last week of October. There were some open flowers but the main bloom was still two weeks or more away. On the plus side, there were very few tourists around and the atmosphere is quite serene.
