Doi Tapang

Chumphon
4.8(5 reviews)

Doi Tapang is a natural tourist destination in Chumphon Province, located in Village 7, Khao Thalu Subdistrict, Sawi District. Situated approximately 500 meters above sea level and 70 kilometers from Chumphon town, it offers 360-degree panoramic views perfect for sunrise watching and sea of mist viewing among uniquely shaped limestone mountains. Visitors can see Khao Thalu mountain, which gives its name to both the mountain and subdistrict. The ascent requires a rugged 3-kilometer journey by local four-wheel-drive vehicles due to the steep and dangerous terrain, taking approximately 20-30 minutes. The summit features Lan Lom Choy camping area with toilets and shower facilities, plus AIS and True mobile network coverage. However, there are no shops or restaurants on-site, so visitors must bring their own food and water. The meeting point is at Malila Coffee in Khao Thalu Subdistrict. The site is accessible year-round and offers excellent opportunities for stargazing, photography, and experiencing the serene mountain atmosphere with minimal crowds on weekdays.

Notes from our team

Who it suits
This spot suits travelers who don't need everything to be comfortable. The road near the top is off-road — broken rocks in parts, slippery dirt in others — and it's narrow with almost nowhere to pull over for oncoming cars. Many visitors park below and ride up in a local pickup truck instead. If you're bringing small children or elderly family members, plan the trip up and down with extra time and care.
Facilities
There are toilets and showers with running water, but conditions are typical of a mountain campsite — don't expect hotel-level cleanliness. One important note: waste management here is limited, so many visitors pack out whatever they bring in. It's a small effort that helps keep the place beautiful for those who come after.
Quiet & crowds
The camping ground isn't large, so it never feels crowded — even on drizzly days you get real quiet with nothing but the cool breeze. But since space is limited, it can fill up during holidays. If you want a peaceful corner, arrive early or avoid long weekend crowds for a more relaxed stay.
