We list four grounds in Satun, and they could hardly differ more: a beach on Ko Tarutao, a forest lake in Thale Ban National Park, and the rafting river at Wang Sai Thong. It is a small province where nature is still quiet and visitors are few.

The Ko Tarutao ground is on the Andaman shore, with a beach to walk, bicycles for exploring the island and a restaurant. Thale Ban National Park is in the hills near the border; its campsite sits on the lake, in several zones, with electricity, showers and a barbecue area, and good stargazing at night. Wang Sai Thong is a shallow, clear, fast river famous for rafting, with two private camps: one has both riverside pitches and a lawn where you park against the tent; the other is near Wang Sai Thong waterfall and has a viewpoint for morning mist.
December to April is Satun's season, with a calm sea and little rain — the time to reach Ko Tarutao. May to October is the Andaman monsoon: rough water, and the park usually closes the islands for the season. The mainland grounds at Thale Ban and Wang Sai Thong work most of the year, but in the rains the river runs strong and muddy, so ask about the water before a rafting trip.
Ko Tarutao means a boat from Pak Bara pier: check the sailings and the park's opening dates first, and bring your own tent, as our information is that the island ground rents no gear. At Wang Sai Thong, rafting groups pass all day on holidays — go on a weekday for quiet — and the riverside pitches mean carrying your gear about 10 metres down. Thale Ban National Park can be booked online in advance, or you can simply turn up.
