Bueng Kan is a Mekong province that people visit for Phu Thok and the Three Whale Rock. We list four grounds, all by water: on the Mekong in town, on Bueng Khong Long lake, and on a river with Phu Thok in view.

There are two Mekong grounds: one in Bueng Kan town, for those who like shops nearby, and a quiet riverside café with a breeze all day. Bueng Khong Long is a large freshwater lake, with a camp offering both furnished tents and pitches, fishing and boat trips. The riverside ground beside a durian orchard has a clear view of Phu Thok and its hilltop temple, with swimming and sunrise.
November to February is cool and clear — the best time to climb to the Three Whale Rock in the morning and return to a riverside pitch. In the rains the Mekong runs high and brown; it is green but wet. In the hot season the river still catches a breeze, though days are very hot, so choose a ground with trees.
Bueng Kan is more than 700 km from Bangkok and has no airport of its own; most people fly to Udon Thani or Sakon Nakhon and drive on. There are few grounds in the province, so reserve ahead for winter long weekends. Half have a restaurant, and since nothing is rented here, pack everything before you set out.
