We list only three grounds in Udon Thani, but one is like nowhere else: the pitching area beside the Red Lotus Sea in Kumphawapi, where you wake up and step straight into a boat. The other two are a farmstay and a private camp in the countryside not far from the city.
The Red Lotus Sea site charges nothing to pitch; the private camps cost ฿100–200 per person per night. All three have toilets and showers, and two of the three accept pets.

At Kumphawapi, the recommended place to camp is by Ban Chae Lae pier, where the lotus boats depart. The farmstay at Ban Pha Sing is about 35 km from the city, a family garden that takes tents, and the camp in Nong Wua So is a natural ground for a quiet night not far from town.
The Red Lotus Sea has a strict season: the flowers bloom from December to February, and only in the morning, so you must be on a boat at first light. Outside those months you can still camp, but there are no lotus fields. The other two grounds work all year — winter is the most pleasant, and in the rains the surrounding paddies are green.
The lotus-side pitching area is open ground by the water: bring lighting and plenty of mosquito repellent. It is busy in lotus season, so arrive the afternoon before. Only one of the three grounds rents gear. Udon Thani has an airport and a railway station, which makes it a good starting point for an upper-Isan trip on to Nong Khai or Loei.
