Chiang Mai has Thailand's widest range of mountain camping — from mist knolls near the city to pitches at two thousand metres. And the surprise in the numbers: the densest zone today is not Mon Cham but Chiang Dao.
Prices run from about ฿30 at park grounds to ฿250-plus for the big-view private lawns, so a Chiang Mai trip scales from shoestring to fully comfortable.

Chiang Dao is now the biggest zone, its camps spread beneath the limestone wall of Doi Luang Chiang Dao — big views and cool air. Mae Rim–Mon Cham is the closest and most convenient to the city, right for short trips and first-timers. The Chom Thong side answers to Doi Inthanon, with real altitude and genuinely cold winter nights.
Beyond those, Doi Saket–Mae On sits east of the city, and the far quieter Hot–Ob Luang stretch to the south suits anyone escaping both the town and the tourists.
Winter is Chiang Mai's season: November to January brings the mist seas and single-digit temperatures on the high ridges — bring a genuinely warm bag. February to April is the northern haze season; the long views vanish and the air is poor for sleeping outdoors, so avoid it. The rains turn the mountains their greenest with few people around, in exchange for slick climbs that demand careful driving.
Many high pitches are reached by steep, narrow tracks — some recommend a pickup or four-wheel drive, so read each camp's listing here before setting out. For the famous grounds over New Year, book weeks ahead, not days.
The high ridges around Inthanon drop to single digits and some nights approach zero — a summer bag is not enough; bring a cold-rated bag and a beanie.
February to April, the northern burning-season haze — visibility and air quality make camping a poor idea.
Many camps, yes — but some high-view grounds are steeper than a sedan should attempt; check the access notes on each listing first.
