Lung Jaroen San Pa Kia

Chiang Mai
4.4(5 reviews)

Lung Jaroen San Pa Kia sits on a ridge in the Chiang Dao district of Chiang Mai province, offering views across to Doi Luang Chiang Dao. The camping area operates as a walk-in site where visitors can access the grounds by vehicle along a mixed surface road of dirt and concrete sections, best suited for two-wheel drive pickup trucks. Once at the site, campers may park their vehicles beside their tents. Facilities include parking areas, a viewpoint for morning mist and mountain vistas, restrooms, shower rooms, electricity supply, water access, barbecue areas, and opportunities for stargazing. Despite visiting during the hot season, temperatures on the mountain drop considerably during the night and early morning hours, so appropriate clothing is advised. The site charges 150 baht per person per night, and equipment rental is not available.

Notes from our team

Getting there
The road up is not too steep and small cars can make it. In late rainy season there are muddy patches; riders recommend the Wat Jom Ki Ri route as the easier way. In cool season the road is smooth with no potholes.

🇬🇧 Review in English, 🇹🇭 ไทย, 🇨🇳 中文 My solo ride to **San Pa Kia** on November 13th was one of those trips where expectations and reality don't quite match up! 🏍️⛰️ A few years back, I couldn't even make it here because of muddy roads, but this time I pushed through with my fully loaded Honda PCX 150. Taking the route via Wat Jom Ki Ri was definitely the right call - still muddy, but way more doable than my previous attempt. Getting to the village, you hit a checkpoint where they take your info. If you're camping at a private spot, it's 60 baht - I went with Uncle Ja-rern's place because the guard said it had better views than the Highland Agriculture Research Station. Spoiler alert: the guard might need glasses! 😅 The campsite was fine for 150 baht a night, but that "better view"? Not so much. The view of Doi Luang Chiang Dao was sideways, and instead of seeing a sea of clouds below, the clouds were actually covering the town! 🌫️ At 19.1°C it was nice and cool for camping, but honestly a bit disappointing after all that buildup. The sunrise comes from the town direction and sunset is off to the side of Doi Luang - not exactly what you'd call picture-perfect. Before leaving, I checked out the Highland Agriculture Research Station campsite that I didn't choose. Turns out it's actually better maintained with proper food stalls and facilities, though it feels less like camping in nature. You probably can't see Doi Luang from there either, but at least you get decent amenities! The irony is you don't even pay the 60 baht gantry fee if you stay there. 讽刺的是住那里还不用交60泰铢的关卡费 🤷‍♂️ Tip: Take the Wat Jom Ki Ri route if you're on a scooter - it's muddy but manageable. The Highland Agriculture Research Station might be the better camping choice if you want facilities without the gantry fee!
