Klaeng–Khao Chamao is the Rayong few people know: park streams feed a set of shaded lawns that feel like a mountain province parked a few dozen kilometres from the sea. Ko Samet is another experience entirely — unzip the tent to the water, walk to dinner — traded against less privacy and park rules that deserve respect.
November to April is the eastern gulf's clear-sea window — Samet at its best. The forest side works most of the year, with strong streams and deep green late in the rains. Mid-year monsoon brings rough water to the island and occasional ferry suspensions, so check the day's notices before travelling.
Samet collects park entry at the pier and island prices run well above the mainland — stocking water and food at Ban Phe before the boat saves real money. On the Khao Chamao side, park food rules exist because this is wild-elephant country: seal every food smell, every night.
