Notes from our team

Who it suits
At this price point, the site suits campers who don't expect luxury — just a low-cost pitch in the middle of nature. Those wanting spotless bathrooms or on-site restaurants may be disappointed, but for a winter overnight with views and sunrise, you get more than you pay for.
Facilities
Electricity, toilets and showers are all included with no extra charge, but the toilets are being upgraded and the water pressure is weak, so patience is required — plan ahead for this. Trash must be packed out; there is no collection service on site.
Value for money
Camping here costs just 10-200 baht per person, as this is a sub-unit of Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park. That covers a tent pitch on Phu Rabieng Tawan with wide views, three viewpoints, and a good chance of spotting wild boar. Far cheaper than any resort on the mountain — if sunrise is the goal, it's money well spent.

Wang Thiam Mek

Wang Thiam Mek

Mukdahan

Wang Thiam Mek (Kaen Lueang Island) offers one of Mukdahan province's most striking sunset viewpoints from a mid-reservoir island at the three-province border of Mukdahan, Kalasin, and Roi Et. The campsite in Mukdahan sits within Huai Wang Nong Reservoir in Nong Sung District, where golden kaen lueang trees grow along the water's edge and calm days bring clear sky reflections on the surface. Overnight camping costs 100 THB per person, with a vehicle entry fee of 50 THB per car. The community-run site has food, drinks, and toilets on-site. The access road is roughly 2 km of unpaved laterite track — too narrow for two vehicles to pass each other, and small cars are not recommended during rainy season. The nearby Tat Ton Waterfall makes a worthwhile side trip. Opening hours are Monday–Friday 12:00–18:30 and Saturday–Sunday and public holidays 10:00–18:30.
