Kaeng Chang Mob

Ubon Ratchathani
4.8(5 reviews)

Kaeng Chang Mob is a camping site along the Mekong River featuring natural rapids interspersed with rock formations. Located in Ban Huai Yang, Khemarat District, 100 kilometers from Ubon Ratchathani city center, this scenic location offers camping opportunities both on the riverbank and on an island in the middle of the Mekong River. Access to the island requires a boat crossing at 100 baht per person. The site is best visited during the dry season, particularly in February when water levels are ideal. The crystal-clear water flows through natural rock formations, while ancient trees grow on the islands. Visitors can enjoy sunset views, white-water rafting during summer, and kayaking activities. The name Chang Mob derives from local legend about an elephant that once died on the rocks, leaving skeletal remains. The area showcases nature's artistry with uniquely shaped rocks and flowing patterns created by the river current. Campers must bring all food, water, and supplies as no facilities are available on-site.

Notes from our team

Who it suits
This riverside site beside the rapids suits campers who want to fall asleep to the sound of flowing water and wake up to rock formations in the Mekong. The air stays cool, the grounds are nearly empty in the evening, and it works best for those seeking genuine quiet rather than a group scene.
Facilities
The grounds have toilets and showers available. For those travelling light, a nearby host offers a full set of camping gear so there is no need to carry your own, and the owner looks after guests closely—reassuring for first-time campers who do not yet own equipment.
Quiet & crowds
The quiet here comes from genuinely low visitor numbers—by late afternoon and mid-morning the site is almost deserted. The only sounds are water running over the rapids and strong gusts of wind that come in spells. Nature-sound lovers will feel at ease, but tents should be pitched securely against the wind.

There was no one there at 10am, the wind was blowing and there was a beautiful sky. Could this be the reason why I really liked the site? Perhaps, but I must say that the Mekong in this point is beautiful. If you are passing by I recommend you go and see.
