Atmosphere

The wide rock platform of Pha Sok sits on a cliff above the confluence of the Mun and Mekong rivers. In the early morning, thin mist drifts over the water as the first light breaks the horizon. A cool breeze blows all day, making it a comfortable spot to sit, stroll, and watch the two rivers meet.

Getting there

Only four-wheel-drive vehicles can make the climb, so the community truck service is the way to go — it departs from the top of Sao Sawan waterfall and the driver doubles as a guide and photographer. The road winds uphill through forest the whole way. Don't rely on map apps, which point to the wrong spot and add a long walk; ask locals for directions instead.

Water & swimming

Natural rock pools on the plateau are known locally as a jacuzzi in the mountains. The water is clear and clean, with separate pools for adults and children. Soaking here comes with a panorama of surrounding peaks — a combination few viewpoints can offer.
