Notes from our team

Who it suits
This spot suits hikers and self-sufficient campers. A trail loops past the Pra Sath rocks and back to the start, and there's a campground for overnight stays. Bring enough food and water for your trip — there's nowhere to restock supplies inside the park.
Quiet & crowds
The campsite sits in mountain forest about 33 kilometres from Chaiyaphum town. There's no mobile reception (dtac) at the campground — you have to go up to the viewpoint to get a signal. With nothing around but forest, the nights are free of noise, though it's worth letting people at home know beforehand.

We had a great adventure through the Phu Lan Lha National Park. We hiked through the Pra Sath Rocks and looped all the way back to the start. The views were impressive, and the nature was luscious. Take hiking shoes to navigate the diverse paths. Mosquito spray and protection from the sun. Take plenty of water and snacks. Once in the park, there isn't anywhere you can top up on your resources. Enjoy.

Phu Lan Kha National Park is a lovely place. It's located about 33 kilometres from Chaiyaphum and about 16 kilometres from Nong Bua Daeng. The national park consists mostly of mountain forest. There is an asphalted road up to the Phu Lan Kha Viewpoint - which is, I think, the most popular place of the national park - and thus one gets there by car or motorbike. (The review and pics of the viewpoint separately.) I rather walked that 2,5 kilometres road upwards to the viewpoint; no cars, no other people, just some 30 °C, so, not too hot, you alone, everywhere green, silence, peace, just enjoy. There are in the national park two big rocks named as an attraction, too - these rocks are not as impressive as in Mor Hin Khao (another park belonging to Phu Lan Kha National Park network) - but the path to the rocks is amazing: walking along the path inside the deep bright green forest is pure magic. The visitor center of the national park was not active during our visit on August, it seems not to be the time for the high season, yet. Phu Lan Kha National Park is very well kept. So, likewise many other places in Chaiyaphum province, Phu Lan Kha National Park is really worth of visit.

Nice weather around January till March in every year. Good for camping, but need to bring your own food. It’s expensive over here. Toilet is clean, but walk a little far and no hot water. No bus station over here, you need to drive or ride your own mobile. Be careful road! It difficult to ride if you never ride up hill. I almost got accident! God bless me!!! Local people ride so fast.

The two pictures why I came here (the "Stonehenge of Thailand", (Mor Hin Khao, ผาหัวนาค) and the cliff, (the Pha Hua Nak viewpoint, มอหินขาว) are NOT located here, but an hour away. The latter is part of the NP, Mor Hin Khao is free. This NP is not very spectacular and if you don't wanna camp there definitely not worth the 100 Baht farang entrance fee (unless you also wanna go see the Pha Hua Nak viewpoint (which is absolutely worth a visit), as it's the same ticket). You can camp here (or at the viewpoint, which I definitely recommend) and they also rent sleeping bags (no idea about tents), which I only found out the next day, after nearly freezing to death during the night. No one speaks English and there is no mobile reception (dtac) at the campsite, so no Google translate (you can get reception at the viewpoint though). Also they don't have a map, only a picture in the visitor center, most (explanatory) signs are in Thai only, so it's a bit confusing. But there is one longer 3.3 km nature trail but you can also only do parts. The lady from the visitor center was very nice though and somehow we managed to communicate (with Google screenshots, my very basic Thai language skills and hand signs) - that's how I found out the points fo interest weren't actually here 😅
