Notes from our team

Atmosphere
Pong Luek sits on the edge of Kaeng Krachan dam, wrapped by mountains and a wide expanse of water. A cool breeze moves across the hills and the shoreline even on summer afternoons. The park staff keep the grounds clean and tidy, and the camping lawn runs right along the dam, so the water and mountain scenery stay in view throughout a stay.
Getting there
Access to Pong Luek follows strict park rules: only 4x4 vehicles may drive up, entry is limited to set times, and motorcycles are not permitted. Travelers without a 4x4 can arrange transport up with the park office in advance. It's best to plan the departure around the park's entry windows before setting off.
Water & swimming
Kaeng Krachan dam is the centerpiece here. Boat trips carry visitors around the reservoir to take in the park's scenery, and the viewpoint above the dam opens out over the wide water. Inside the park there are hiking trails and birdwatching spots, so mornings and late afternoons can be filled without going far from the camping lawn.
Best time to go
Winter is the best season for camping here, especially December and January when the weather turns milder than the rest of the year. The breeze over the hills by the dam helps even on strong summer sun, but nights in the tent are most comfortable in the cool season. Plan and book ahead, as this is when the camping lawn sees its heaviest use.

Set in a beautiful location with very helpful professional staff. Plenty to see and do and some nice caffees. Fast but very safe boat rides to visit monkey inhabited islands, all at very reasonable price. Excellent . Well worth a visit.

When we asked what we could expect at this national park for a hefty entree fee of 300 bht, the staff could only mention butterflies. You were only allowed to enter at certain given times with a 4x4 car. We were not allowed to enter the park with our motorcycle. It might be a World Heritage, I skipped a visit.

Kaenng Krachan dam & National park is around 70klms from the center of Hua Hin. It's a great place for a day trip to explore the area or stay over night at one of the many resorts scattered near and around the dam. Also there is a very well maintained camp ground in the National park on the dam's edge. December / January is a good time to visit the area as the weather is a lot milder. You can take a boat trip around the dam, view some fantastic scenery around the National park and surrounding area especially up at the dam view point and don't forget to have great Thai meal at one the many local restaurants.
