Atmosphere

The ground sits at the highest point of Sapan, above the fog line, with views sweeping nearly 360 degrees down to Sapan village in the distance. The site is laid out on several terraced levels, so campers can pick their own corner. Before dawn the fog rolls in thick on almost every side and lingers until around 9 am, while nights turn genuinely cold, especially in the cool season.

Getting there

Access is about 1.5 km from Sapan village along a descending stretch of gravel mixed with concrete and stone. Sedans and motorbikes can make the climb, though the rougher sections call for care and low-slung vehicles carry some risk. In dry conditions the drive is far easier. Supplies can be bought down in the village when the walking-street market is on.

Best time to go

The fog is at its most dramatic in the rainy season, but that is also when the dirt road turns slippery and is best avoided, so the cool season strikes the better balance — cold, comfortable nights, morning fog still on offer, and open skies on the high ground that make for clear sunrises, sunsets, and stargazing.
